  • How can you treat swallowing problems?
The approach used in treating swallowing problems depends on finding what is causing the swallowing difficulty. Generally, we find that swallowing problems in children can stem from a chronic underlying medical condition that affects the central nervous system: Children with conditions like Cerebral Palsy or Down Syndrome, for example, can face significant challenges with swallowing due to this. Treatment plans often involve exercises for the affected muscles, as well as strategies and maneuvers to improve the efficiency of speech and the safety of swallowing. If you have a family Pediatrician that you regularly see and can refer you accordingly, they will typically fill out and send a Patient Referral form (see attachment) to notify our office that you and your child are ready to make an appointment with Legacy. • Will insurance cover speech therapy?
Medicaid payment structures are used to pay for services for vulnerable populations, which may cover the speech therapy services recommended for your child. For families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid health care, but are unable to afford private insurance, the government offers certain benefits to cover necessary medical care for children: One of the benefit programs offered within the state is the TexCare Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). To learn more about eligibility and coverage options, please visit the Government Benefits page: https://www.benefits.gov/benefit/1613 and/or contact us at (832) 980-7061.
  • My child's speech is tough to understand. How long can I expect that it will take to correct it?
It is difficult to say how long it will take to correct the problem without a thorough assessment of the child. However, most children that we help start showing progress within the first month of therapy. Please keep in mind that the time it takes to see progress depends on various factors, such as the type of condition and severity, the child's motivation, his or her family support, as well as the frequency in treatment the child receives over time.
